Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving was really fun! I flew down to Memphis and my mom picked me up and we spent most of our time in West Point, Mississippi, where my great grandparents live. Here is what we did in pictures :)

We chatted outside with our cousins...

Played dolls with Jameson and Bentley...

Wrote letters to Santa (Katie is working hard)!

Took family pictures of course :) Gibbs Clan (-Frank)

Got down with our bad selves (Burkley Ann)

Ran outside with sticks (Weston)

And of course there was some football played... (I think Ray might be cheating...)

Grateful

This is probably going to be a super sappy post but I am warning you now... I have been thinking about the truly wonderful people in my life and I just thought that they deserve a little Internet shout out, in no particular order I am incredibly grateful to the following individuals:

Tia Masters Nelson: for being my life coach and telling me the same thing over and over until I finally understand, or open myself up enough to really listen to what you are saying. I think that eventually I would get to the place that you tell me to get too on my own, but its much easier with someone who can tell me exactly what I need to hear in a way that I will listen. I am so thankful that you came back into my life and I cannot even begin to express how amazing of a mother you will be. If it is even half of the "big sister"/friend that you have been to me that is one lucky ninja :)

Kate Charipar: my second life coach :) I can't begin to say how awesome you are and how much you have taught me in the last few months. I am so happy to have found my soul mate ;), we are so much of the same person that I think Kyle gets jealous that he can't be in on the fun... One day we will dominate the Compliance world and rule with glitter, rhinestones and tiaras...

Kat Abke: my life mentor (yes I am that complicated that I need two life coaches and a life mentor) I am grateful that Kat is still not annoyed that I am following her in every life step. Undergrad Sport Management major at Michigan: CHECK; University of Utah Law School: CHECK; Stirba and Associates: CHECK, next step is up to Kat...

Alyssa and Meaghan: my workout buddies and oldest Angelzz friends! I am so thankful that we can get together and kick each other's butts, because I know that I would have quit p90x by now if it weren't for you two! Thanks for the motivation and the happy smiles early in the morning, you guys are the best and I am so glad that we have become close friends again!

My parents: who are always supportive of any stupid idea that I have and are more supportive of the non-stupid ideas! I am grateful that they still semi-support me in my "old" age...

Synchro Skating Worlds!

Not many people know that I was a synchronized figure skater for 10 years and I still do some choreography with my friends I used to skate with who have small teams. So anyway, I high school skating was my thing, I didnt spend too much time at school so my high school friends are the ones that I skated with. We are all getting older (most of us are married and some have kids) and we dont really get together as much as we should! When I was off skating at Michigan, we used to have a bi-annual reunion, one at Christmas and one over the summer.

Anyway, Synchro Worlds are in Colorado Springs, CO this year and we all decided that it would be fun to go! I can't tell you how exciting this is, (1) because Worlds is AWESOME and (2) because we all get to go together. Colorado Springs holds special signifcance for me because that is where I started skating, and where I competed at my first Nationals (with the Ice Angelzz) and my last nationals (with Michigan Collegiate)...

All there is to do now is wait until April!

Here are some pics of when I skated the first one is at nationals my Senior year (I am in the very front line (of 3) farthest right)

And this one is from Nationals my Junior year, I again am in the front :) (that is my "yearning" face and arm :))

two posts in one day, lucky

This song totally and completely defines my life right now, its amazing you should go download it from iTunes!

Leona Lewis
Happy

Someone once told me
that you have to choose
What you win or lose
You can't have everything
don't you take chances
you might feel the pain
don't you love in vain
cause love won't set you free
I could stand by the side
and watch this life pass me by
so unhappy but safe as could be

so what if it hurts me
so what if I break down
so what if this world just throws me off the edge
my feet run out of ground
i gotta find my place
i wanna hear my sound
don't care about all pain in front of me
i'm just trying to be happy
just wanna be happy...

holding on tightly
I just can't let it go
just tryin to play my role
slowly disappear
well all these tears
they feel like they're the same
just different faces, different names
get me out of here
i can't stand by the side
and watch this life pass me by

so what if it hurts me
so what if I break down
so what if this world just throws me off the edge
my feet run out of ground
I gotta find my place
I wanna hear my sound
don't care about all pain in front of me
i'm just tryin to be happy

so any turns that i can't see
i'll encounter strangers on this road
but don't say victim
don't say anything

so what if it hurts me
so what if I break down
so what if this world just throws me off the edge
my feet run out of ground
I gotta find my place
I wanna hear my sound
don't care about all pain in front of me
i just want to be happy....

St. George Girls Trip

This weekend some of my girlfriends and I went down to St. George to see Aida at Tuacahn... Nicole's parents have a condo down there so we stayed at the condo, laid out in the sun on Saturday morning/afternoon (of course I watched the Michigan game--GO BLUE) and then went to the play on Saturday night. Some of us came home early on Sunday (I did because I had so much homework to do)

Photos from the condo:

Red rocks on the way to Tuacahn:

The beautiful stage and the canyon behind...

The girls:

Tasha, Michelle, Amy and Brooke

Me, Tasha, Michelle, and Amy

Nicole, all by herself :( (we had one seat that was all alone so Nicole sat there first and then Michelle switched with her at Intermission (or halftime as we were calling it))

Nate and Angie: September 12, 2009

My good friend Angie got married this past Saturday. She and her new husband have been together since we were all in high school! This was the second wedding of an Ice Angel (our former synchronized skating team) this year! (Alyssa got married on August 15: read that post here)...

I got a new camera so the greatness of these pictures is mostly due to the equipment...

Right after they were pronounced man and wife!

They got married at the Johnson Mill in Midway, BEAUTIFUL location (I still think that the swans were planted! Come on, two white swans come swimming up towards the wedding during the cocktail hour? To perfect to be true... or it could be too perfect to be planned :))

Mr. and Mrs. Fairbanks

During the toasts...

Fancy dancing!

It was a beautiful wedding and I am so happy for you guys!

New Things

The last few weeks have brought some new things, here is a non-exclusive list of those things with accompanying photographs:

**School started again, I am now a second year law student with hopes of doing well this year and landing an awesome job

**I started working in the Office of Athletics Compliance at the University of Utah, and I LOVE IT! Unfortunately for me, working in athletics complaince doesn't make nearly the money that private legal practice makes, but I'll make that decision when the time comes

** I got some new "things" in my life (see photos below)

**I also felt true exhaustion for the first time in my life. I was so tired at the end of this week that I physically got sick, I am working on getting my life more organized so that doesn't happen again...

This is not a new thing but there are only 64 days until the World Cup Bobsled and Skeleton races in Park City (first races of the season) and 159 days until the start of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver! I can't wait to cheer on Team Holcomb ;)

Alyssa and Rob: August 15, 2009

Alyssa got married on August 15, 2009. We skated together all thoughout high school, and she and Rob have been together that long! They got married at a beautiful catholic church and had their reception at Market Street in Cottonwood Heights.

During the ceremony

Ice Angelzz (and yes we do this at every event...)

Nice first dance, turned into...

Napoleon Dynamite!

Garter time...

I am so happy for you guys, they left the next day for their honeymoon in Hawaii! So jealous...

Josh

My really good friend Josh was diagnosed with cancer almost 2 months ago and he posted this video on his facebook page, and of course I was balling at work...
This video is quite the tear jerker...
Josh really means a lot to me and he is one of the strongest, most humble, and bravest people I know.
He is an amazing person and I can't wait for him to be done kicking cancer's butt!

It has been too long! (life update)

A lot has happened since I last posted. I went to Michigan had a great time seeing Emily and Ryan and hanging out. We did feel old becuase we didn't go to any of our old campus hangouts, because we've been graduated for 2 years so we felt out of place!

Coldplay was amazing... it was Em's first concert and now she might be ruined for all other shows! The band came up to a small stage that was about 12 rows in front of us! There really are no words to describe how AWESOME it was!

After that I just came home and worked at the UOP!

The 4th was really fun. I worked all day and then headed up to Snowbird for Alyssa's Bachlorette Party! It was a great time but I was SOOO tired the next day (I'm not used to staying up til 3am, much less dancing like a crazy person til then)

Cassie and I moved last Friday we now live in an apartment complex south of where we lived before. We are already loving the light and ceiling height in our new place...

I also got a new job this week! One of my friends from Michigan who also happens to go to SJQ College of Law emailed me saying the firm she works for was looking to hire someone to help with this really big case they have, and I got the job! I am really excited for the experience of actually working as a law clerk and I am so grateful that I have great friends... My last day full time at the UOP will be Friday July 24, and then I will work two additional weekends (8/1 and 2; 8/8 and 9) and then I will be done at the park forever... I've said that before!

Monday was a big day, I found out I got the job at the law firm and I had a retreat for my other job at the Athletic Dept. Over the school year I will be working for the University of Utah Athletic Department in the Compliance Office. I am excited because its a non traditional legal carrer that could really work with my undergrad degree (sport management for those who didnt know)... I think that I am going to get along with everyone there and I am excited about the work that I will be doing. It was a good preview of what the fall will be like--busy and fun!

So that is what I have been up too for the past two months! Up next: Tia's wedding tomorrow night, The Fray on Saturday, Chuck and Brittnie's wedding next weekend, Alyssa's wedding August 15, Nicole and Osiris' reception-August 15, and last but not least Angie's wedding September 12!

No Good, terrible, very bad week!

Last week was super rough!  I started out the week doing great, Monday I had my property exam which was nice actually because it was multiple choice and fairly straight forward.  We will see what I think when we get my grades :)

After that was over, Tuesday I headed to the UOP to work and get the Comet store and what not ready for the summer season.  I was reorganizing the cords and cutting some zip ties and the scissors slipped and i cut a good chunk out of my finger!  The Park EMTs came up to clean me up but they told me that I had to go to the clinic because there was no telling when the blood was going to stop.  I went to the clinic and they numbed my finger and cauterized the blood vessels so that it would stop bleeding!  They couldn't give me stitches because it was not deep enough and plus I cut the entire section off cleanly :)  All in all it bled for 2 hours and I got a band aid and a finger splint to protect the tip of my finger so that a good scab could form and the skin could re-grow.  As of now, I am out of the splint but still keeping it in a band aid so that it stays protected.

Wednesday we had a review session for CrimLaw because that exam was the only one remaining for Friday May 8, 2009.  So I was in a rush because I finished my outline on Wednesday morning and went to have it bound so that the notes I took during my review session would be on the outline and easily accessed for the exam.  My printer runs out of ink on the last two pages so I take my flash drive with me to FedEx/Kinkos where I get my outlines bound so they could print the pages and bind it for me.  So I get there running late of course.  Get my pages printed and bound and head for school.  I am about 20 minutes late for the review session at this point.  I'm walking quickly across the street in my new yellow dress that my mom bought me when she was here (thanks mom :)) So I decided to run up the stairs to get to the review session faster, keep in mind these stairs are right by a pretty busy intersection.  I fall up the stairs, naturally.  Wearing flip flops I broke my big toenail in half, and skinned the next two toes.  Bleeding all over my flip flops I ran to the law school and to the bathroom to clean off the blood and it was bleeding quite a bit so I grabbed some extra paper towels and headed for the review session.  Naturally, since I was 30+ minutes late there was like one seat and everyone was staring at me when I came in the room.  I forgot to mention that I also skinned my knee pretty badly...  So to complete the picture my foot is bleeding, I have a really skinned knee and I am wearing a finger splint from where I cut part of my finger the day before...  Mostly I was a mess!!  Needless to say I made it through the review session...  I also had to take my outline to get rebound because they put a super tight spiral on it.  I got some more interesting news that day that sums up to someone really important to me needed to take a step back from his life and make sure everything was on track...  I have started calling it the life break and I'm counting the days until he come back from life break!  It has been really hard to not talk to him because I think about him so much everyday and I care about more than is probably good for me.  But this is a really important year for him so I am trying to be patient and let him figure it out.  That night I got a little bit of a release when I went to dinner at Zupas and X-men with some of my girlfriends.  It was good to see all of them because school had taken over and I miss them!!

Thursday I got ready and headed for school to chat about criminal law with some of my classmates so that we could work everything out and do great on our exam the next day.  That was a good idea because we talked out most of issues that came up in the exam the next day.

Friday I had the exam in the morning, then Cassie and I went out to lunch at CPK to celebrate me being done with my first year of law school!  Plus we had to go to build-a-bear for a mother's day present and I had to pick up my Race for the Cure packet.  I didn't end up running because my foot was still hurting me so I stayed home.  Friday night we made cakes for our project on Saturday.

Saturday we entered a cake in the Stirring up Wishes Cake Baking contest for the Make-a-Wish Foundation.  Here was my vision for the cake, that Cassie helped me create because my finger left me out of commission to do it all myself...

There are four categories of wishes that Make-a-Wish grants, to be, to have, to go and to meet.  So we made the top tier a star and the small stars around the bottom were the four types of wishes!  The bright spot at the end of the week was that we won SECOND PLACE with our cake!  Second place got an hour massage :)

Also I want to wish my mom a very Happy Mother's Day.  She is so understanding and willing to help all of her kids in whatever way we may need her!

Days like this also make me miss my grandma more than ever!

Make-a-Wish

Betty Crocker is running a campaign called "Stirring up for Wishes".  You can go on their website every day and vote for the chapter that you want and they will grant one wish for that chapter.  Wishes as you can imagine are quite expensive and as a non-profit organization Make-a-Wish depends on donations, which are coming in slowly in this economy.

Please head over to the website and vote for Utah!  Wisconsin is leading our group right now, but if everyone who reads this blog heads over and votes we can surely catch up!

Here is the link

Thanks everyone, and don't forget to vote DAILY!

Summer!

Since the high tomorrow is supposed to be 70 degrees, I decided it was time to inform everyone of my summer plans...

I will be working at the Utah Olympic Park for one more summer (you've all heard that before right?!).  It's just too good of a job to pass up right now.  I get to do what I want and it's really easy.  Plus I have a job for the school year next year so I don't have to stress about that or paying tuition because that is what my job pays!  I am really excited about that so now all I have to do is make enough money to live through the summer and save some!

I do have on trip planned already.  I am going to Ann Arbor May 28-June 3rd to hang out with Emily and Ryan.  Allison is going to come up from Ohio (her birthday is that weekend) so we can all have a mini reunion!  I miss Ann Arbor a ton, but I am not sure if it is the place or the people, I am pretty sure its the people and the carefree college life that I lived!

Cassie and I are thinking about going down to help my parents move from South Carolina to Florida but we will see if that happens, our summers are filling up quite quickly.  The Fray is coming July 18th, so we are definitely going to that, and then Chuck and Brittnie are getting married July 25th!  So that is two Saturdays gone in July...  Alyssa and Rob are getting married August 15th and by then school starts again!

I am excited for it to be WARM again!

Vegas!

Cassie and I went to St. George and Vegas for my Spring Break.  We really needed to get away from our busy/crazy lives in Salt Lake so it was great to have a place to go...

Cassie's Birthday

Cassie turned 23 today!
Cupcakes I made for Cassie's Birthday...
After playing Settlers and before dinner we needed some time outside so we decided to take a pile of wood and make it into a circle of stumps where we can have campfires in the summer and potentially vote people out of the family if they are being mean...
Completed stump circle
Then we realized that there weren't enough stumps for everyone so we painted our initials on them so we made sure that we had stumps...
Cassie's stump

My stump :)
